South Korea SK Gas to commence LNG trading

SK Gas is preparing for entering LNG trading after starting LNG-fired power generation, terminal and gas chemical business. The company intends to participate in a LNG hub construction project that is taking place in the Tongyeong area in South Korea to commence LNG trading.

SK Gas signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with 16 companies in order to carry out the small-scale LNG hub project. The Tongyeong city and participant companies will invest 250 billion wons together to build a LNG terminal that consists of facilities including a factory producing ISO tanks, a shipping facility and a landing facility for vessels by 2023.

ISO tanks are small-sized storage tanks for LNG, with the size just as containers. They are suitable for transportation at sea as well as that on land. Therefore, they have a benefit that they can be used in areas where pipelines of natural gas are not installed.

ISO tanks are expected to be exported mainly to China and Southeast Asia. In November 2019, BK group in China imported two ISO tanks for the first time from a South Korean company other than SK Gas.
