Japanese trading company group builds LNG thermal power plant in Myanmar

Last month, the Myanmar government granted exclusive rights for building a power plant under the Thilawa LNG To Power Project to SUMITOMO CORPORATION, Marubeni Corporation, MITSUI & CO., Ltd, and the Eden Group Co., Ltd, a conglomerate in Myanmar, in the Thilawa district near Yangon, the largest city in Myanmar. These four companies will establish a joint venture(JV) to build a thermal power plant that uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. The JV will not only build the power plant, but will also take charge of the procurement of LNG and the construction, ownership and operation of storage and regasification facilities. The output of the power plant is expected to be 1,250 MW. For 25 years after the start of commercial operation, it will sell electricity to the Myanmar State Electric Power Generation Corporation (EPGE). The total cost of the construction project is currently estimated to be around 186 bil yen. The Eden Group was founded in 1990 and is engaged in a wide range of businesses including construction, hotels, and finance. In the energy field, the Eden Group is developing offshore oil and gas mining and exploration projects for coal mining.
