Singapore begins construction of floating solar farms

In Singapore, construction of a large-scale floating solar farm started in August, as announced by the Public Utilities Board (PUB) . The construction is undertaken by Sembcorp Industries subsidiary Sembcorp Floating Solar Singapore. The new solar farm is located at Tengeh Reservoir in western Singapore, and is expected to be completed by the end of next year. It is said to cover about 45 football fields and will be the largest floating solar farm in the world. It will be the third floating system in Singapore and will have a peak power generation capacity of 60MW. Two farms that are already operating have a small capacity of 1.5MW each. When the large-scale system is completed, all floating solar farms in Singapore are expected to meet the electricity demand of about 16,000 households for one year. This is said to be equivalent to 7% of power supply from PUB. Further, it is estimated that this can reduce 32 kilotons per year of carbon emissions. Sources say that this has the same effect as removing 7,000 automobiles from the city.
