Asia faces oversupply for polyethylene

In the polyethylene market in Asia, in addition to the restart of facilities that had stopped operations due to regular maintenance and troubles, new facilities are scheduled to start up in 2021. Thus, supply is said to be ample. Further, two new facilities started operations in the April-June period in the US and supply to Asia is expected going forward. In Asia, supply is likely to become more plentiful in the future. On the other hand, as COVID-19 continues to spread in the world, demand remains sluggish in general.

On the other hand, overall supply in 2021 seems not be considerably changed. In Asia, although new facilities of about 5mil mt production capacity will start operations, it is unclear if they would operate as scheduled. In addition, operation rates of existing old facilities are expected to be low.

As for demand, polyethylene demand for packaging, consumption products and medical use is said to be firm in 2021 as well. Nevertheless, demand for other uses is expected to be still weak due to decreasing exports and cash flow problems. Future demand is unclear.
