Singapore plans to import electricity from Malaysia

The Singaporean government announced in October last year that it plans to import green energy in the near future to increase the proportion of electricity produced by renewable energy. The plan is to import green energy via the Asian power grid from neighboring Malaysia. It is expected to be transmitted by submarine cables. 100 MW of green energy will be imported during two years of the trial period. This amount of electricity is equivalent to about 1.5% of the peak electricity consumption in Singapore. The process of selecting a supplier will be made clear by the end of March 2021, and imports will start as early as the end of 2021. Singapore currently meets about 95% of its electricity demand with thermal power generation fueled by imported natural gas including liquefied natural gas. The Singaporean government is focusing on expanding renewable energy to achieve the goal of zero carbon dioxide emissions after 2050, which is being pursued on a global scale. In particular, the government is looking at solar power, and plans to increase peak period solar capacity to 2 GW by 2030.
