LNG: May 18-22: NE Asian end-users moving to buy

--DES Northeast Asia
In Northeast Asia, several end-users in Japan, Korea and China moved on spot purchase including for prompt cargoes since current spot prices were lower than long-term contract prices. China's Guanghui Energy had bought a cargo by May 15 for delivery to the Qidong terminal in late June to early July in the mid $2's. Major Korean steel manufacturer POSCO procured a cargo via a small-scale tender closed on Tuesday for mid-June delivery to the Gwangyang terminal at $2.30-2.40. Apart from this, Tohoku Electric Power, Shikoku Electric Power and Osaka Gas had also bought spot cargoes. Royal Dutch Shell and US Chevron considered procuring cargoes to replace supply from Australian projects. Overall demand was strong.

--FOB Middle East, DES South Asia and the Middle East
Qatargas refrained from actively selling and perceptions of ample supply eased. 10 or more vessels were waiting offshore to load cargoes from the 77.00 mil mt/year Ras Laffan project of Qatargas. Although there were no reports about problems at gas fields and liquefaction facilities, production efficiency at liquefaction facilities might have fallen slightly. Players taking cargoes would not easily make their vessels wait since demurrage would be incurred. Therefore, supply from Qatargas might have dropped slightly from planned volumes.

In the US, the liftings of as many as 20-30 cargoes were expected to be canceled in June and July. Angola LNG was believed to have closed a DES-based sell tender on Monday and an FOB-based sell tender on Tuesday. The former tender was for a cargo to be delivered to Singapore and Thailand as the farthest destinations although the delivery period was unknown, while the latter was for a cargo loading on Jul 11-20. Meanwhile, in South America, Argentina's state-run IEASA and Colombia's Calamari LNG carried out buy tender for June to July delivery cargoes and for May to June delivery ones, respectively.
