Japan’s top utility Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said Monday it started commercial operations of its Ogishima solar power plant earlier in the day.

The solar power plant, together with the Ukishima solar power plant, which started operations Aug. 10, has been constructed in a joint undertaking with the Kawasaki municipal government in Kanagawa prefecture. It has a maximum power generating capacity of 13 MW, with its annual output reaching about 13,700 MWh, equivalent to consumption by about 3,800 general households. It has the effect of reducing CO2 emissions by about 5,800 mt per year.

The Ogishima and Ukishima solar power plants have a combined capacity of 20 MW, one of Japan’s largest.
