Taiwan CPC invests in Balongan petrochemical project

Taiwan's national company CPC, together with Indonesian state-own oil and gas company Pertamina, is progressing with the Balongan petrochemical project in West Java, Indonesia. CPC is estimated to invest a total of US$22 billion. The new plant to be constructed can produce 1.00mil mt/year of ethylene. Construction will begin this year and operations are expected to start as early as 2026. In the future, there are plans to expand the project to include facilities for manufacturing derivative products using ethylene as a feedstock.

Pertamina's current production capacity for petrochemical products in the whole of Indonesia is low at 700,000mt/year. In addition to the Balongan project, the company plans to expand and modernize its oil refining and petrochemical complexes in Dumai, Cilacap and Balikpapan. Further, the company will newly construct production facilities in Tuban and Bontang. Sources perceived that Pertamina's production capacity for petrochemical products might expand to 6.60mil mt/year around 2026.
