Power: Nov4- 8: Warm sunny autumn presses markets down
Japan's power prices in the wholesale markets dipped further in the short week to November 8 due to a national holiday of Nov 4 on the combination of slackened demand and relatively ample supply under warm temperature this time for year together with rather fair skies. Western markets experienced some 0.01 yen/kWh units (one unit = 30 minutes, 0.01yen = minimum price under the current rules) on the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX) following the prior week
Based on the Rim Power Index (Day ahead 24 hours), the weekday power prices in the eastern market, including Hokkaido, Tohoku and Tokyo area, averaged out at 8.04 yen per kilowatt hour (kWh), down 0.59 yen/kWh or 6.8% from the prior week, meanwhile prices in the western, made up of Chubu, Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu area, at 6.38 yen/kWh, down 0.29 yen/kWh, or 4.3%. The gap between the western average and Kyushu's stood at 0.14 yen/kWh nearly equaling to prior week's 0.13 yen/kWh with western's 6.38 yen/kWh and Kyushu's 6.24 yen/kWh, which are calculated based on data of JEPX. The Kyushu market recorded three 0.01 yen/kWh units for Nov 5 delivery, six for Nov 6, and two for Nov 8, meanwhile, other five western areas, including Chubu, Hokuriku, Kansai, Chugoku and Shikoku, saw two for Nov 5, one for Nov 6. And Shikoku experienced four for Nov 8 as well. The premium of Hokkaido against Tokyo was at 0.33 yen/kWh compared with prior week's minus 0.06 yen/kWh, with Hokkaido's average 8.34 yen/kWh and Tokyo's 8.01 yen/kWh.
In eastern Japan, Tokyo's weather for the week days was projected to be generally fair on a day ahead basis, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Western Japan's Osaka and Nagoya were expected to be favored by good weather. Photovoltaics stations appeared to generate excessive electricity during daytime in western Japan. Tokyo's daily maximum temperatures during the week were forecasted 19 degree Celsius to 21 during Nov 5 to 8 versus to the prior week's range of 15 deg C to 24 deg C. Osaka's max temperatures were estimated for the same period at 18 deg C to 21 deg C against the prior range of 15 deg C to 24 deg C. Some thermal power plants restarted after a hiatus for autumn maintenance, adding downward pressures on markets. Especially in the Tokyo area, for example, 470kW and 160kW-gasfired plants resumed operations on Nov 5. Before that, a 1,000-kW-oilfired plant backed on line on Nov 2. Additionally, a 600kW-gasfired plant was reconnected with the grids on Nov 6.
On the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX), the weekday average of System Price (Day ahead 24 hours), which are computed based on the data of 9 areas, slipped by 0.21 yen/kWh or 2.9% to 7.14 yen/kWh, with the average volume decreasing by 21,072 megawatt per hour (MWh) to 771,531 MWh.
