Fire occurs at heat exchanger of JX Negishi refinery’s lubricant-making unit

2011/10/10 07:10

A fire broke out at a heat exchanger of a lubricant oil-manufacturing unit at JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp.’s 270,000 barrels a day (b/d) Negishi refinery in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture, around 6:30 p.m. Sunday Japan time. The fire was extinguished at 8:55 p.m., causing no injuries, JX said in a press release.

The 8,200 b/d lubricant-manufacturing unit was offline for regular maintenance work when the fire occurred. The cause of the fire was still unknown, and JX said it will identify the cause and take measures to prevent a recurrence of fire.

The Negishi refinery has two crude distillation units (CDUs) comprising the Nos. 1 and 4 units. The 120,000 b/d No. 1 CDU is due to be shut down for maintenance from Oct. 12-Nov. 4. The No. 4 CDU has capacity to process 150,000 b/d.

The latest fire follows one, which broke out at the Kashima refinery with capacity of 252,000 b/d, including that of a condensate splitter, of the JX group’s Kashima Oil Co. on Oct. 1
