Dyson announces construction of EV factory in Singapore

2018/12/07 12:00

UK consumer-electronics company Dyson, which is well known as the company that developed and produced the cyclone vacuum cleaner, announced in October that the company will manufacture electric vehicles (EV) in Singapore. The news was much talked about among industry players. The factory is slated for completion in 2020, Dyson plans to start sales from 2021. Factory construction will start as soon as this December.

Dyson cited geographical location as a reason for choosing Singapore as a production hub. Singapore is close to major Asian countries where the EV market is expected to expand further amid high economic growth. In particular, China is said to be the biggest EV market in the world.

Dyson was believed to have started to develop EV in 2016. Dyson constructed factories in Singapore in 2007 that manufactured motors for vacuum cleaners, and the company now employs a total of 1,100 workers in its three factories. Motors manufactured in those factories are mainly used in its high-end vacuum cleaners.
