North China Petrochemical Project Group, a subsidiary of PetroChina, started operations of an oil refining upgrade project with a production capacity of 10 mil tons. This is part of China's national energy development plan. The project will supply 8 mil tons of petroleum products per year to Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei, and also plays a role in regional energy upgrades. The project began feasibility study in 2006 and trial runs started in 2019. An investment of roughly 15 bil yuan helped to increase the oil refining capacity from the existing 5 mil tons by another 5 mil tons. The project produces high-grade oil such as gasoline (standard VI), gasoil (standard VI) and jet fuel, and produces more than 30 products such as polypropylene, benzene and xylene.
