Power: Oct 9-13: Eastern prices spike under surprise ”hot” attack

2017/10/16 07:00

Wholesale power prices in Eastern Japan shot up for the week to October 13 amid unseasonably hot weather, with Western prices moving up moderately. Based on the Rim Power Index (Day Ahead 24 hours), the weekday power prices in the east for the week averaged out at 11.58 yen per kilowatt hour (kWh), up 3.27 yen/kWh or 39.4% from the previous week, and in the west at 9.32 yen/kWh, up 0.49 yen/kWh or 5.5%.

A sudden upswell in electricity demand for air-conditioning equipment exerted upward pressure on prices due to summerlike temperatures, around 30 degrees Celsius, returning in Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka early in the week. Weak supply from photovoltaics (PV) and a few stoppages at liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants amplified price increases in the east, whereas, in the west, PV’s healthy power distribution limited gains under sun-blessed conditions. Additionally, the hot air lingered until Oct 12 in Tokyo.

On the Japan Electric Power Exchange (JEPX), the weekday average of System Price (Day Ahead 24 hours), which are calculated from data of 9 areas (excluding Okinawa), climbing 1.37 yen/kWh or 16.2% to 9.83 yen/kWh, with the average volume for weekday dropped by 7,444 megawatt (MW) to 156,065 MW.
