LNG: Apr 5-9: Sinopec buys up to 50 cargoes to Tianjin terminal

--DES Northeast Asia

Regarding the buy tender closed by Sinopec on Tuesday for up to 50 cargoes for delivery June to February 2022 to the 10.80 mil mt/year Tianjin terminal, eleven companies were mentioned as the winners including Britain's BP, Litasco, European trader Vitol, Germany's RWE, Mitsui, Glencore, Royal Dutch Shell and Russia's Gazprom. Thereafter, it was found that Gunvor, PetroChina International (PCI) and Six One Commodities, a major US energy company, also sold cargoes. The awarded price from these four companies were reportedly at a small discount to flat to DES Northeast Asia spot quotations. Sinopec was enhancing the capacity of its natural gas underground storage facility "WEI23" in the northern part of Henan province which began operations in 2019 and was increasing its purchase volume for delivery to the 10.80 mil mt/year Tianjin terminal, which is connected to "WEI23" via a pipeline. In winter until February, natural gas from the underground storage was released via the pipeline network but during a low demand season in April to May, natural gas stocks would rise sharply.

Thailand state-owned PTT bought a cargo for delivery during May 7-15 to the 11.50 mil mt/year Map Ta Phut terminal via a tender closed on Wednesday. The winner was unknown but the price was in the low $7's. In Thailand, temperatures were rising towards summer and gas demand for use in power generation and air-conditioning was increasing. As reported, Thailand was taking natural gas via pipeline from the Yetagun gas field in Myanmar but after the military coup, the situation was unstable and operations were disrupted, causing production to fall sharply. As a result, supply to Thailand decreased and PTT had to buy LNG in the spot market.

Cargo destinations included Brazil, Europe, Mexico, India, Pakistan, Singapore, China and Japan. The cargo was expected to be loaded onto the 137,814cbm tanker "Golar Arctic".
