Indonesia to start trial production of bio-jet fuel this year

Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company, announced in late July that it would start trial production of bio-jet fuel or green aviation turbine fuel (avtur) this year. Green avtur is jet fuel that is produced using crude palm oil (CPO) as a feedstock. This is expected to be produced at Pertamina's Cilacap refinery in Central Java province. At the beginning, crude oil that is mixed with 3% CPO will be used as a feedstock. In the future, the company is scheduled to produce the fuel by refining 100% CPO. Joko Widodo, the Indonesian president, ordered his relevant ministers to realize the production of green avtur, which is made from palm oil and is eco-friendly, in August last year. The president pointed out that the use of green avtur that is produced in the country will not only improve the environment but also decrease the import of fuels and reduce its trade deficit. Therefore, the president is aggressive in promoting the production of biofuels.
