First commercial flight with jet fuel blended with palm-oil in Indonesia

Indonesia state-owned Garuda Indonesia was the first to conduct a commercial flight with jet fuel blended with palm-oil on Oct 27. A Boeing 737-800NG operated by the airline transported more than 100 people 550 kilo meters from Jakarta to Surakarta city. The fuel was made by state-owned Pertamina at its Cilacap refinery, using hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) technology. The volume of greenhouse gas emissions from fuels made from palm oil is said to be smaller than that from fossil fuels. Indonesia is world's largest producer of palm-oil and is trying to decrease the imports of fuels by expanding the use of palm-oil based fuels. The government had previously enforced a bio-fuel mix of 3% in aviation fuels by 2020, but the target has not yet been achieved.
