Singapore to cease registration of new diesel cars and taxis from 2025
The Singapore government has recently announced that it will halt registering new diesel cars and taxis starting from January 2025. Meanwhile, goods vehicles, buses and cars under the Classic Vehicle and Vintage Vehicle schemes can be registered.
In addition, owners of diesel cars registered before 2025 will be allowed to drive their vehicles. Nevertheless, they will be subject to higher road taxes. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that the proportion of new diesel car and taxi registrations has been below 1% in total since 2021.
According to the LTA, as of May 2024, there were 164,759 diesel vehicles including goods vehicles and buses, which accounts for about 17% of all vehicles in Singapore. Nevertheless, there are only 19,972 diesel cars and taxis in Singapore.
