North building of Osaka Gas to be listed as tangible cultural property
|
The North Building that Osaka Gas Corp has used as a headquarter along the Midosuji street in Osaka since 1966 was expected to be added to a list of national registered tangible cultural property. The education board of Osaka city would make an application to the Agency for Cultural Affairs and Osaka Gas agreed. Once the building is registered in the list, the value of the building was expected to increase as a symbolic and tourist site although some governmental procedures will be required for exterior works from the perspective of building protection. Osaka Gas foresaw that the building would be listed as early as March 2024 if the application was smoothly accepted. The North Building has eight floors, which is the same as the South Building next to it, but its total floor area is larger than that of the South Building by about 50%. While the South Building constructed in 1933 was listed as a national registered tangible cultural property in 2003, the North Building met the requirement of 50 years or more after completion this time. For the energy industry, facilities such as power plants are listed as national registered tangible cultural properties but it is rare for headquarter buildings to be registered. As a side note, in the South Building, a restaurant is available for the general public on the eighth floor.
