Indonesia increases consumption of biodiesel

The Indonesian government in December decided to increase the allocation of biodiesel for 2024 by approximately 13.41 mil kl, up 1.96% from the previous year. Prior to this, the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (IPOA), also known as Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (GAPKI), had announced that domestic consumption of biodiesel would expand to approximately 12.2 mil kl in 2024. In Indonesia, 95% of biodiesel produced is consumed domestically and 5% is exported. The Indonesian government mandated that the blending ratio of biodiesel made from palm oil, known as B35, in diesel fuel used for transportation domestically be increased to 35%. The use of this type of oil has been spreading smoothly since August 2023. Meanwhile, the introduction of B40 is expected to take several years owing to the rising costs of palm oil and insufficient production facilities.
