S Korea Hanwha Total completes 310,000mt/year cracker expansion

South Korea's Hanwa Total Petrochemical announced on Sep 17 that it completed an expansion work for the NCC SIDE Cracker. The newly-added capacity is equivalent to 310,000mt of ethylene and 130,000mt of propylene per year. With the cracker expansion, Hanwha Total will be able to produce 1.40 mil mt of ethylene and 1.06 mil mt of propylene per year.

The NCC SIDE Cracker requires less investment than the conventional Naphtha Cracking Center. The cracker can use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a feedstock, capitalizing on its lower cost than naphtha in the current market.

Meanwhile, Hanwha Total is poised to boost its annual capacity to produce polyethylene to 400,000mt by the end of 2019, followed by a plan to expand capacity for ethylene, propylene and polypropylene. The firm eyes an increase in production of 150,000mt of ethylene, 40,000mt of propylene and 400,000mt of polypropylene per year by the beginning of 2021. Hanwha Total targets to beef up synthetic resins output and switch its core business to high value-added products.
