Indonesia plans to double geothermal power generation

The Indonesian government decided to make an initial public offering(IPO) for state-owned Pertamina Geothermal Energy (PGE). The IPO is expected to take place in the second quarter of 2022. PGE operates a geothermal power generation business under the state owned oil and gas company Pertamina and the funds raised by the IPO will double the power generation capacity over the next five years. PGE's geothermal power generation capacity is currently estimated to be 900 MW. The government hopes that the IPO will reduce national spending on the geothermal power generation business so that power generation by renewable energy can be expanded. Indonesian state electricity company PLN plans to cease the use of coal power plants by 2056. PLN plans to convert 15GW from fossil fuels to renewable energy in Indonesia. The plan to double geothermal power generation by PGE is in line with PLN's policy of strengthening power generation derived from renewable energy.
