Hydropower / Solar Hybrid Power Plant Construction Rush in Thailand

In Thailand, construction of hybrid power plants based on floating photovoltaics and hydropower is being carried out one after another. The Electricity Generating Authority of ThailandEGAThad carried out a tender in March for the construction of a hybrid power plant based on floating photovoltaics and hydropower at the Ubol Ratana Dam in northern Khon Kaen Province. The plant is scheduled to start its operation in 2023 with a generation capacity of 24 MW. Last October, EGAT completed a large-scale hybrid power plant based on floating photovoltaics and hydropower at the SirindhornDam in Ubon Ratchathani, Northeast Thailand, 660 kilometers east of Bangkok The solar panel is said to be one of the largest in the world, equivalent to 70 soccer fields. It was built at a cost of US$34 million with 145,000 solar panels installed. The power generation capacity is 45 MW. The Thai government set a goal of zero emissions of carbon dioxide, a major cause of global warming, by 2050. EGAT plans to construct 15 more hybrid power plants based on floating photovoltaics and hydropower by 2037, and it is estimated that about 30% of all power generation would be covered by renewable energy by the same year.
