Malaysia to launch new SAF facility in second quarter of 2025

Malaysian palm oil waste recycling company Gamalux recently announced that it will complete construction of a renewable energy fuel production facility as early as the second quarter of 2025. The facility, located on Pulau Indah in Selangor, will have the capacity to produce up to 90,000mts of fuels such as sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) per year. SAF will be produced using feedstocks such as biomass and waste cooking oil.

HVO is produced by hydrotreating vegetable oil or waste cooking oil, and has properties similar to diesel. SAF and HVO are more capable of reducing carbon dioxide emissions, compared to products made from fossil fuels.

The Malaysian government plans to make it mandatory to use jet fuel containing 1% SAF from 2027, and to increase the blend ratio to 47% by 2050. In addition, the country plans to launch several SAF production facilities with annual production capacities of 350,000 to 650,000mt in 2027 to 2028.
