Indonesia's first nuclear power plant construction becomes reality, site survey approved
Indonesia's nuclear energy regulatory agency Badan Pengawas Tenaga Nuklir (BAPETEN) gave approval to PT Thorcon Power Indonesia (PTTPI) in August for a site survey to construct a nuclear power plant. The country's first nuclear power plant construction became a reality. PTTPI is a subsidiary of Singapore-based Thorcon International. The Singapore company is an affiliate of Thorcon, a US nuclear power development enterprise. PTTPI plans to construct a 500MW thorium power plant in Kelasa Island, in Central Bangka, about 700 km from the capital Jakarta. It submitted the plan to BAPETEN in February. In May this year, the Indonesian government decided to include nuclear power in its power supply configuration roadmap and announced its aim to introduce 10GW of nuclear power by 2040. State-owned electric power company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) added the construction of a nuclear power plant into its power supply business plan or RUPTL for 2025 to 2034 with a draft proposal that it will expand its nuclear power generation capacity to a maximum of 7 GW by 2040. |
