Singapore targets 2GW clean energy generation by 2030
Dr Tan See Leng, Singapore's Minister for Manpower and Minister-in-Charge of Energy, Science & Technology, Ministry of Trade and Industry, announced that the government would aim to achieve 2 gigawatt-peak (GWp) of clean energy generation capacity by 2030. The target was unveiled in his opening address at the 18th Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW).
Of the total, 1.7 GWp is expected to come from solar power. Singapore will also expand cross-border electricity trading within ASEAN and advance studies on geothermal and nuclear energy technologies. Regarding nuclear power, Singapore has already agreed to collaborate with US research institutions to study small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) and other advanced technologies.
Besides, Singapore is set to import hydropower from Sarawak, Malaysia, and has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Indonesia and Vietnam to develop a 300 megawatt (MW) biomethane power generation project with each country.
