China wind and solar power generation in 2025 up 25% on year

By Ma Dongwei

According to statistics from the National Energy Administration of China, the country added more than 430 mil kW of newly installed wind and solar power generation capacity in 2025, consisting of 120 mil kW of the former and 318 mil kW of the latter, an increase of 22% on year and reaching a historic high. The grid-connected capacity of wind and solar power reached 1.84 billion kW, accounting for 47.3% of the total, surpassing thermal power. The "green content" of electricity consumption continued to increase. In 2025, wind and solar power generation rose 25% on year, accounting for 22% of total power generation and driving the proportion of renewable energy in total power generation to nearly 40%.

Since the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China's new energy development, represented by wind and solar power, has reached an unprecedented speed, with the total installed capacity reaching 3.4 times the level at the end of 2020. Its share of electricity generation has increased by more than 12 percentage points, contributing increasingly to energy transformation. All the goals of the 14th Five-Year Plan have been accomplished, laying a solid foundation for peaking carbon emissions before 2030.
