Malaysia begins domestic SAF production in Johor State

In Johor State, Malaysia, commercial production at a biofuel plant commenced earlier this year. This marks the country's first production facility for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The plant also produces hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and bionaphtha, with a total combined production capacity of 420,000mt per year.

The facility is located within the Iskandar development region, which hosts a large-scale petrochemical complex and port infrastructure. Feedstocks include used cooking oil and palm oil residues.

The plant is operated by EcoCeres, a biofuel company that was originally part of Towngas in Hong Kong and now has significant investment from Bain Capital. EcoCeres utilizes proprietary technology to produce SAF and HVO from waste oils and plant-based residues, and is expanding its presence in the renewable fuels sector, particularly across Asia.
