Indonesia to establish commodity exchange for palm oil
|
The Indonesian government has recently finalized its plan to establish the Strategic Mineral and Commodity Exchange (BMKS) as early as January 2027. The primary commodities to be handled by the exchange are currently expected to be Crude Palm Oil (CPO), nickel, and coal. President Prabowo holds strong skepticism towards domestic resources being traded based on prices from foreign exchanges. He has successively introduced unique policies aimed at protecting the value of domestic resources. From June this year, a state-managed system for the export of coal, palm oil, and ferroalloys was implemented, aiming for full operation from next January. Indonesia is the world's largest producer of palm oil. However, the international benchmark for Crude Palm Oil (CPO) is currently CPO futures traded on Bursa Malaysia, the stock exchange of Malaysia, the second-largest palm oil producer. It remains to be seen what impact the establishment of Indonesia's commodity exchange will have on international trading practices. |
