AFASA2025= Japan Drives Strategy for SAF Rollout

At the Innovation & Policy Summit (IPS) hosted by the Asia Sustainable Aviation Fuel Association (ASAFA) in Tokyo on Jun 18, speakers emphasized that Asia must legislate policy support within the next 18 months in order to decarbonize its aviation sector by 2030. For Japan to meet its target of achieving a 10% SAF blend by 2030, proposals were made to introduce a phased blending mandate--starting at 2% in 2027 to match with CORSIA Phase II --and to implement technology-neutral tax incentives and subsidies. The summit also highlighted concrete developments such as the successful commercialization of Sapphire Sky Energy's retrofitted facility in Osaka, and a potential opportunity to export ethanol from Thailand to Japan. Going forward, Japan is expected to play a central role in shaping an integrated SAF market in the Asia-Pacific region.
