JERA, Petronas Ltd. 2 mil tons/yr LNG pact
|
On Jun 10, JERA announced that it had signed an LNG sales agreement with Petronas LNG Ltd.. It would receive a supply of 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually for 20 years from 2028. The agreement was reached based on a memorandum of understanding to strengthen LNG value chain collaboration, which was signed last June. Recently, against the backdrop of rising geopolitical risks, including heightened tensions in the Middle East, securing a stable supply of LNG has become indispensable from an energy security perspective. Furthermore, domestically, the seasonal difference in LNG demand has expanded due to factors such as the aging of oil-fired thermal power plants and the increasing introduction of renewable energy. The need to secure flexibility in energy supply is increasing. Through this agreement with Petronas, JERA aims to secure a stable energy supply for Japan. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar, who was visiting Japan, at the Prime Minister's Office on Jun 10, and they agreed on a policy to strengthen cooperation on energy and resource security.
