LNG: Oct6-10: Jitters over price spikes on cold snap, production issues
In Japan, gas demand for power generation appeared somewhat brisk. In Japan, spot demand was not detected, but gas demand for power generation appeared somewhat brisk. In Tokyo, the peak power demand on Oct 7 was 34.09GW. Since the beginning of October, the peak power demand on weekdays in Tokyo hovered in the mid 30GW level, almost matching the size of demand in the corresponding period a year before when the temperatures marked record-breaking highs. In Kansai, meanwhile, Kobe Steel unexpectedly shut down the 650MW No4 unit at its Kobe coal-fired power station on Oct 4. An industry source said, "If the loss of power supply from Kobe Steel creates a crunch in West Japan, power suppliers in West Japan could buy LNG or other fuels on a spot basis." On top of that, many players expected a pickup in heating demand as the winter season is nearing. A source at a Japanese trading house said, "There is a risk that an arrival of cold snaps coincided with troubles at LNG projects could cause a spike in prices." In December 2021, Japan was gripped by cold waves earlier than in usual years. On top of that, at least four LNG projects suffered production outages including the 29.3 mil mt/year Bintulu project in Malaysia and the 15.6 mil mt/year Gorgon project in Australia. The tightness in supply-demand fundamentals sharply lifted the market for prompt delivery by more than $10.00 in one month.

GAIL sought bids for all of those cargoes on a floating basis linked to Netherland's TTF (Title Transfer Facility) quotations.

In the tender closing on Oct 9, JE Energy offered one cargo for Nov 11-15 loading out of the 22 mil mt/year Bonny Island project. Bids valid through Oct 10 were also invited on a DES basis.
